Spring bulbs are pure set-it-and-forget-it magic. You plant them in fall, the coastal rain waters them all winter, and come spring they put on a show. But what if one pot or one patch of garden could bloom from late winter right through to May? That's the beauty of a bulb lasagna. It's one of our favourite fall projects, and easier than the real thing (no oven required).

New to bulbs altogether? Start with our Beginner's Guide to Planting Fall Bulbs for the basics, then come back here to take it up a layer.

What is bulb lasagna?

Bulb lasagna (some folks call it layer planting) means stacking different bulbs at different depths in the same pot or bed. Big, late-blooming bulbs go deepest. Smaller, earlier bloomers go on top. Each layer blooms in turn, so as one flower fades, the next takes its bow. You get weeks and weeks of colour from one small footprint, which is perfect for patios, front steps and small gardens.

Pick your layers

Our bulb tables are full right now with tulips, daffodils, hyacinths, crocus, snowdrops and more. Here's a classic recipe:

  • Bottom layer (deepest, about 8 inches down): tulips or daffodils. These are the large bulbs that bloom in mid to late spring. Choose one or mix them for a longer finale.

  • Middle layer (about 5–6 inches down): hyacinths. Mid-spring blooms with that unforgettable fragrance. Put the pot near your front door so you can enjoy it every time you come home.

  • Top layer (about 3–4 inches down): crocus and snowdrops. The first to pop, often while the rest of the garden is still asleep. They're a welcome sign that spring is on its way.

Tip: plan your layers around a colour scheme, such as white snowdrops, purple crocus, blue hyacinths and yellow daffodils, or go all-white for an elegant look.

How to build your bulb lasagna, step by step

  1. Choose a deep pot with drainage holes. At least 12 inches deep gives you room for all three layers. Drainage is non-negotiable on the Coast. Soggy soil rots bulbs.

  2. Start with good soil. Use a quality container mix, such as Nurseryland Premium Container Mix or SeaSoil Container Complete, and add a few inches to the bottom of the pot.

  3. Add your deepest layer. Set tulips or daffodils pointy end up, close together but not touching. Cover with a couple of inches of soil.

  4. Add the middle layer. Place hyacinths, then cover them with a couple more inches of soil.

  5. Finish with the top layer. Scatter crocus and snowdrops, then top up the soil to about an inch below the rim. Don't worry if bulbs aren't sitting directly above each other. The shoots will find their way around.

  6. Water well, then let nature take over. Give it one good soak, and set the pot somewhere it won't sit in standing water. A little mulch on top helps.

Planting in the ground? The same idea works in garden beds. Dig one wide hole to the deepest depth and build up your layers as you refill it. Mix a little compost into the soil as you go. Find soils and compost on our soils and mulch page.

Deer, squirrels and other uninvited guests

On the Sunshine Coast, deer are part of the neighbourhood. Daffodils and snowdrops are usually left alone. Tulips and crocus are deer favourites, so keep those pots close to the house, cover them with netting over winter, or use a repellent (ask us about Plantskydd).
