Mud Season Fix: Gravel Paths and Driveways That Stay Put with CORE Grids

Let's be honest: on the Sunshine Coast, fall doesn't so much arrive as pour in. And by about now, a lot of us are tiptoeing across a soggy lawn to the shed, dodging puddles on the way to the car, or raking the same gravel back onto the driveway for the fifth time this year.

If that sounds familiar, there's good news. You don't have to wait for spring (or pour concrete) to fix it. A gravel grid keeps your path or driveway firm, tidy and free-draining all winter long, and it's a project you can tackle on a dry weekend. Let's get to the nitty and 'griddy' of it.

Why gravel paths and driveways turn into a mess

Loose gravel is a great, budget-friendly surface, but on its own it has a few bad habits, especially in our wet climate:

  • It migrates. Car tires, wheelbarrows and little feet push it into ruts, onto the lawn and into the garden beds.

  • It sinks. On soft or clay-heavy soil, gravel slowly gets pressed into the mud below, so you keep topping it up.

  • It puddles. Once ruts form, water sits in them, and before long you've got potholes.

  • Weeds move in. Bare soil under thin gravel is an open invitation.

Before and after: a rutted, patchy gravel driveway, then the same driveway smooth and firm on CORE gravel grids

Meet CORE Foundations: the honeycomb that holds it all together

CORE Foundations are interlocking honeycomb grids that you fill with gravel. Each little cell locks the stone in place, so it can't wander off or sink, while the open surface still lets rain soak straight through to the ground below. That means no puddles, no runoff, and healthy soil underneath. They even come with a geotextile fabric already attached to help keep weeds down.

We carry two CORE grids at B&K:

  • CORE Path 38-18: a light-duty grid made for garden paths, patios, trails, and smooth wheelchair and stroller access. It comes in single 9.9 sq. ft. panels at $39.99 each.

  • CORE Gravel 50-35: a heavy-duty grid built for residential driveways and parking areas, with low maintenance once it's in. It comes in single 9.7 sq. ft. panels at $49.99 each.

Fun fact: Drew and Jonathan Scott of the Property Brothers have used CORE Foundations on several of their celebrity renovations. If it's good enough for TV, it's good enough for your back path!

Where a gravel grid makes the biggest difference

  • That worn-in shortcut across the lawn to the shed, compost or chicken coop

  • Gravel driveways and parking pads that rut and puddle every winter

  • Patios and fire pit areas you'd like to enjoy without sinking in

  • Hot tub and RV bases

  • Side yards and garden paths that need to be wheelchair or stroller friendly

  • Dry, low-water garden designs (xeriscaping) where you want gravel to stay put

How a CORE project comes together

Every yard is a little different, so come chat with us before you start. Here's the general idea:

  1. Mark out your path or driveway and measure the square footage, so we can work out how many panels you need.

  2. Clear and level the area. Depending on your soil and how much weight the surface needs to carry, you may need a compacted base layer first. We'll help you figure that out.

  3. Lay the panels and connect them together. They're light and easy to cut to fit curves and edges.

  4. Fill the cells with gravel and give it a good compaction.

  5. Step back and admire a path that won't go downhill on you. Literally.

Our bulk bins have the gravel covered. We carry 3/4" and 1/2" Clear Crush, Birds Eye Pea Gravel, Road Base and more, by the yard, half-yard or 5-gallon pail. See our full aggregates lineup. Ask us which fill suits your project best.

Need the tools? You can rent our plate compactor for $55 a day, or a hand tamper for $15 a day.

Why tackle it now?

Fall is when you really see where the water goes. Walk your yard after the next big rain and you'll know exactly where that path or driveway fix needs to be. Getting it done now means a cleaner, drier winter (and fewer muddy boots by the door), and you'll be all set to enjoy your outdoor spaces from the very first sunny day of spring. Your future self will thank you.

And there's no need to haul a truckload of gravel yourself. We deliver anywhere on the Sunshine Coast, usually same-day, starting at $85. Our split-box truck can even bring two products in one trip. Learn more about delivery.
